It’s official – we’ve reached a huge menstrual milestone. Hello Cup has saved more than 200 million single-use sanitary items from landfills and waterways across the globe.
Hello Cup Boss-Girls Mary and Robyn say they’re “bloody proud” to have reached the 200 million figure.
“Each Hello Cup is the equivalent of over 2,000 tampons or pads,” says Robyn. “Single-use period products generate an astounding amount of waste and that’s something we need to address - especially when our customers tell us that reusables are far more comfortable and convenient.”
“People are often surprised to hear that most tampons and pads take at least 500 years to break down due to the fact they contain micro plastic. The first tampon ever used is still somewhere on our planet trying to disintegrate, which is pretty horrific to me, as is the fact that some marine life mistake plastic-ridden tampons for food. We can do better."
Hello Cup’s next mission is to have saved 1 billion single-use products from landfill by 2025, and Mary reckons achieving this next milestone is well underway. “For a young company, it’s very cool to have stockists and customers all of the world. Our brand awareness internationally is really high which is pretty awesome for a small Kiwi start-up."
Robyn says Hello Cup hopes the upcoming roll-out of free period products in New Zealand schools will include reusables in the future. “It’s amazing to see the issue being addressed, but we’d love the Government to look at adding menstrual cups and period underwear to allow students to make sustainable choices too.”

Vaginal cup, period cup, menstrual cup... Whatever you call it, The Hello Cup is a great choice.
It’s worth remembering that we don’t recommend buying your cup based on your flow alone. Instead, sizing is based on fitness and age.
Our XS is our smallest, softest cup. It’s the perfect choice for teenagers, petite users or those who prefer a ‘mini’ tampon.
Our S/M is our ‘one size fits most’ menstrual cup. We recommend it for users under 35 – regardless of whether they have had children or not.
Our L (L for ‘Lovely’) is best for those over 35 who feel it’s a bit more roomy up there.
It’s worth noting that we find physically fit people are often best suited to the S/M regardless of age. If you’re uncertain, Hello Double Boxes are a great option to help you find which size works best for you. Many people find they can wear two sizes.
